The disclosures about NSA surveillance have created doubt about the way the Internet is governed and the U.S. role. This talk will try to put these doubts in perspective, comparing US protections of privacy and civil liberties with those of other countries, including some that have criticized the US, and will argue that overreaction in the form of national firewalls will do great damage to the open environment that has made the Internet such an engine of innovation and freedom.

As Acting Secretary and General Counsel of the U.S. Department of Commerce, Cam Kerry was a leader on data privacy and other technology, trade, and rule of law issues vital to U.S. economic growth in a global marketplace.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
