A boy is desperate because he doesn’t have enough money to buy medicine for his sick mother. After unsuccessfully asking a miserly rich woman for a loan, the boy then takes up chopping wood to sell, but unfortunately his ax falls in the lake. A goldfish rises to the surface, hears the boy’s sobs and decides to help, not only by recovering the ax, but also by giving him a golden ax with magic powers.
