(1 Dec 2018) 'HAMILTON' CREATOR LIN-MANUEL MIRANDA HONORED WITH WALK OF FAME STAR IN HOLLYWOOD
"Hamilton" creator Lin-Manuel Miranda got his shot at Hollywood immortality Friday (30 NOVEMBER), as he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The Pulitzer-winning New Yorker admitted his earliest Walk of Fame memories tied in to celebrities who had died.
"It was when you would see flowers being left on the stars when someone had a passing -- an untimely passing. That's my first relationship," Miranda said to hundreds of fans witnessing the ceremony in front of the Pantages Theatre. "It was a distant thing from somewhere else for possibly accomplished people and a way for everyday fans to honor them and pay their love and tribute to them. So, for me to be performing in this incredible theater and it means the world to me that my star is outside this theater because I love it so much. In the height of 'Hamilton,' we were both here."
While he had already enjoyed Tony-winning success with the 2008 musical "In the Heights," it was the ground-breaking "Hamilton" that catapulted Miranda to superstardom in 2016. Over the course of his career, the 38-year-old Miranda has earned a Golden Globe nomination, won the Edward M. Kennedy Prize for Drama Inspired by American History, wrote music for a top movie, and inspired a best-selling book, a best-selling album of "Hamilton" covers and a popular PBS documentary. Oh, and in 2016, the hip-hop stage biography won Miranda the 2016 Pulitzer Prize for drama.
"You are the real deal. You are a truth teller," said fellow Puerto Rican-American actress and singer Rita Moreno. "You deserve this honor, you have earned this honor in my book. Especially because you made a choice. You made a choice to focus the brilliance of your star power for the good of others. I mean, I'm talking about hunger, family, disaster-relief, education, advocacy, mentoring youth, I could go on. Your energy is boundless, hombre."
Miranda next appears in Walt Disney's "Mary Poppins Returns," a sequel to the 1964 musical classic, which opens in the United States Dec. 19.
