(4 Oct 2018) Nobel chemistry winner Frances Arnold celebrated her prize with her students and fellow faculty members at the California Institute of Technology on Wednesday.
Arnold was one of three researchers who won the prize for harnessing "the power of evolution" to produce enzymes and antibodies that led to a new best-selling drug and biofuels.
The 62-year-old learned of her prize while traveling in Texas but flew back home for a ceremony honouring her at the Pasadena campus where she's worked for three decades.
Arnold said she was "stunned" to be told she had won the Nobel, explaining she had to "collect my wits for at least 10 seconds to accept the call".
She gave credit to her research team at Caltech, saying: "I never knew how lucky I was until I actually got here and was inspired by people who think big and solve big hard hairy problems."
Arnold was awarded half of the $1.01 million prize, while the other half will be shared by George Smith of the University of Missouri and Gregory Winter of the MRC molecular biology lab in Cambridge, England.
