Bird's-eye view of Indonesia's ruins amid recovery

(4 Oct 2018) Drone pictures on Thursday captured the recovery of a body from the ruins of a hotel in the city of Palu, as workers continued to search collapsed buildings. The recovery comes almost a week after Indonesia's Central Sulawesi province was hammered by an earthquake and subsequent tsunami. The official toll has surpassed 1,400 deaths with thousands more injured and more than 70,000 residents displaced from their homes. Recovery teams on Thursday continued to retrieve bodies from beneath collapsed buildings. But so far the relatives of Irfan Ariff are not among them. His parents and aunt remain buried beneath the wreckage of his home. He survived because he was at the hospital with his daughter when the earthquake struck. He says he can no longer go near the site. "If I see the house, I can't take it anymore," he says. "On previous days I could go and look, but today, no. My heart is broken. I've ran out of tears. I'm not strong enough." And to add to his distress, he and the others in the battered Balaroa district of Palu also face deteriorating security. "Almost every day there are looters here. Even though there's a lot of people suffering, they still loot," he says. Indonesian police say 92 people have been arrested for looting goods in areas devastated the earthquake and tsunami in Central Sulawesi province.
