Everything is normal, except that among the three people he has to face there is a guy who is constantly sarcastic and who keeps hurling abuse at him. The bemused interviewee learns that this is done deliberately so that they can see how he copes with ‘Extreme Negative Feedback’. A hilarious little clip from the brilliant comedy duo Mitchell and Webb. Taken from the BBC series ‘That Mitchell and Webb Look’. Level: C1 – C2 Topic: Business / Work / Interviews [NB: I do not own the copyright to this video clip. I have uploaded it here for educational purposes]. SCRIPT [MI: Male Interviewer / S: Scott / D: Derek / FI: Female Interviewer ] MI: Right. Well, this should be relatively painless… Scott, you’ve been with Celecron for 3 years now, is that right? S: 3 years, yes, that’s right… (D makes a derisive sound) MI: …And, during that time you’ve been responsible for Marketing initiatives, within your department… S: Broadly yes, although my remit tended to overlap with distribution. D: Oh, for God’s sake! MI: Sorry, I should just point out Derek is just here to provide what we call ‘Extreme Negative Feedback’ * so we can assess your ability to cope with stressful situations – is that all right with you? S: Oh, I see – yes, that’s fine… D: Oh, it’s fine, is it? Oh, well, as long as it’s fine that’s all right then… FI: So, would you care to outline for us (D: Wanker… * ) the main priorities facing a successful applicant for this position? S: Well, the main problem, as I see it, has been our over-reliance on our core customers. D: Yeah, right… S: I mean, obviously they’ve got to be looked after (D: Fag… * ) but there’s no chance of the company achieving any meaningful growth (D: Stupid fag… * ) in.. in the long or in the medium term, unless we find a way to attract new consumers. D: Oh, this is all great! This is so great – let me get all this down… (he places a typewriter on the desk and pretends to type mockingly) S: …Whether we do that by putting more resources (D: Mmmm… absolutely… yeah) into existing strategies or whether we try to overhaul our whole approach is of course a vexed question. D: Oh, ‘vexed’, yeah that’s good – it’s all so vexed… * S: It’s a major rethink we’ve got to… (D: Ding!) then obviously, we’ll need to look at next year’s budget (D: Ding!) and see what needs to… (D: Ding – Ding – Ding!) FI: That makes sense. MI: Incidentally, you’re coping very well with ‘Extreme Negative Feedback’. S: Well, thanks… * I think I’ve got the hang of it now… AH! **
