(15 Oct 2018) Prime Minister of the Netherlands Mark Rutte and Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz have both expressed optimism that a Brexit deal can still be reached, despite tough negotiations about the Irish border.
The two leaders met on Monday night ahead of the European Union summit starting Wednesday, at which Britain's divorce negotiations from the bloc will take centre stage.
Rutte said both him and his Australian counterpart were "cautiously optimistic" with a lot work left to do with regards to "the issue of the border".
He said he hoped a conclusion would be reached "over the next 24 hours," but stated, "otherwise, we need a little bit more time".
Kurz reiterated the same optimism, however noted Austria will do "everything possible to avoid a hard Brexit".
