Day 1 of the McDonald's under-13 rugby tournament at The Oval yesterday. This year marks a historic format change to the annual tournament. For years teams were school-driven and based on where players were living. With junior rugby becoming club-run several years ago, schools felt there was a need for a completely different format and Poverty Bay Rugby Football Union obliged. http://www.gisborneherald.co.nz https://www.facebook.com/gisborneherald https://www.youtube.com/gisborneherald This year's tournament still features teams from Wairoa and East Coast, but the other four teams, named after rivers, are development sides selected from the clubs. Union chief executive Doug Wilcox said the aim was to make the sides as even as possible and get rid of some of the one-sided scores of past years. Day 1 scores indicate that has worked. Te Arai defeated Waimata 26-22, Wairoa beat Turanganui 40-33 and Ngati Porou East Coast downed Taruheru 34-29.
