The National Federation of State High School Associations oversees sports activities in high schools throughout the country in conjunction with its member associations in each state and the District of Columbia. The NFHS promulgates playing rules and regulations for several high school sports, including boys and girls basketball. The rules and regulations include specifications for court dimensions, equipment, uniforms and behavior. According to a 2008-09 NFHS survey, basketball is the third-most popular high school sport for boys and the second-most popular for girls. Court Dimensions The NFHS specifies the optimum court length as 84 feet, but does recognize that some court sizes may be less. The optimum width of the court is specified as 50 feet. There must be at least 3 feet of cleared space around the perimeter of the court, but 10 feet is preferable. The basket at each end of the court is 10 feet off the court, and the three-point line is 19 feet, 9 inches from the basket. The uniform numbers must be centered vertically and horizontally on the jersey, with the numbers a minimum of 4 inches in height on the front and 6 inches on the back. No uniform can use the numbers 6 through 9. Although a zero can be used as part of a uniform number, the number 0 and 00 are prohibited. Undergarments must match the primary uniform color. Good Sporting Behavior Along with the technical rules of play, the NFHS promotes rules to foster good sporting behavior. A rule change that took effect for the 2010-11 season is intended to address poor behavior that demonstrates "resentment, disgust or intimidation" by leaving the court for an unauthorized reason. In a May 2010 news release, the NFHS also stated that it would emphasize a sporting behavior recommendation that players coming on to the court for warm-ups avoid interfering with opposing players' warm-up by running through them or under their basket. Concussion Guidelines Player concussions are a concern at all levels of competitive sports, and the NFHS issues guidelines on handling concussions suffered by players during practice or a game. The NFHS guidelines state a player who suffers a concussion should not return to play or practice the day the concussion is suffered and medical attention should be obtained the day of the occurrence. A player should also be medically cleared by a qualified medical professional before returning to play. The NFHS also emphasizes that a player does not have to lose consciousness to suffer a concussion and that coaches should be on the look-out for symptoms indicating a concussion, such as dizziness, headaches and inability to concentrate.
