United Nations, New York, 16 June 2009 - The Executive Director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), Michel Sidibé says "time is running out" for the world to meet the challenge of universal access to HIV/AIDS treatment.

Speaking after the General Assembly HIV/AIDS Review at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Mr Sidibé told reporters now is not the time for the world to falter in its committment to making drugs and treatment, particularly for the poorest of the poor, accessible and affordable.

He called on world leaders not to use the Global Financial Crisis (GFC) as an excuse to abandon the global fight against HIV/AIDS.

Mr Sidibé says leaders not only have a political responsibility, but a moral one too when it comes to tackling this global health epidemic.
