Recep Tayyip Erdogan (inset) led the vote with a 51.7 per cent share as the final results from around the nation trickled in on Sunday. Erdogan needed over 50 per cent to retain the presidency, otherwise a second round of voting would take place next month. But Bulent Tezcan, the spokesman for the main opposition CHP, said it was too early for Erdogan's AKP-led coalition to celebrate on Sunday as he claimed results had yet to be announced from several Turkish cities. Despite Tezcan's warnings, Erdogan's supporters flooded the streets of Istanbul to celebrate, waving vast flags and lighting flares in a striking display of patriotism. Elsewhere, the pro-Kurdish Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) garnered 11 percent of the vote, above the threshold it needs to reach to enter parliament - sparking wild celebrations from its supporters in the southeast of the country.
