More than half of all injuries to US troops are caused by explosions. A large percentage of these are injuries to the head. The US Army is currently field-testing face shields in Afghanistan that protect against shrapnel and could possibly mitigate brain trauma from bomb blasts. The MTek G3 maxillofacial shields that the Army is testing weigh 1.5 pounds and can also stop some high-velocity 7.62mm rifle rounds, according to the company.
