Khajuraho, the mystical Land of Kama Sutra, is home to one of the ancient Hindu and Jain temples in the World, which have mesmerised people with their brilliant architecture and intricately carved sculptures amongst which the most famous are the erotic sculptures of nymphs, tantrics and celestial beings. While they represent the importance of love and desire in our lives, they also depict the Hindu philosophy that you can only attain salvation, once you are done with all your worldly pleasures, which is why there are no such carvings inside the temples. I visited this tiny laidback town with my family two years ago, and I must admit that instantly fell in love with it. So green, so simple and so full of history and heritage! During our weeklong stay in Khajuraho, I visited the temple complex numerous times during sunrise and sunset to admire the grandeur and the enthralling beauty of these remarkable structures and make some brilliant pictures. While these stunning temples and other historic sites in the town left us awestruck, there was one unusual sight that we witnessed in Khajuraho. In the evening while coming out of the temple complex, we noticed the squawking and shrieking armies of parrots flying in the sky making beautiful patterns before perching to the barren branches of the trees. It appeared as if all the sculptures from the temples had come alive and taken the form of a parrot to enjoy some time together before returning to their respective places. I asked a local about it, and he told me a compelling story. According to Hindu mythology, Lord Kama Deva (the Lord of Love and Desire) mounts a parrot, and the temple facades here are adorned with beautiful carving depicting the scenes of love and desire; hence, so many parrots live here, in the Land of their Lord Kama Deva. If you ever plan a holiday to India, I would highly recommend you to visit Khajuraho and experience the stunning architecture of the temples in the company of thousands of parrots.
