We've heard a lot in the news lately about polar vortexes. 

But what exactly are they?

Polar vortexes are like hurricanes except they are cold air masses that swirl around over the north pole and suck all the cold air into their circular web. 

Normally they keep that frigid cold air over the north pole.

But this year those polar vortexes are breaking up and whipping down in a southerly direction.
