Sukkot (Shabbat - Sat. 29th September/20th Tishrei) The Jewish Wave Notes: : • This is the Shabbat during our celebration of Sukkot. What a strange festival. We leave the comfort of our home and ‘hang out’ in a fragile temporary hut that seems unfinished having no real roof, just some vegetational cover. But then we, Jewish people, do not conform to common norms. Even our survival for thousands of years is abnormal. So maybe the very act of conformity and seeming normality is fatal to our spiritual health. • And in that state of seeming departure from the norm, we take a branch of a date palm, some leafed willow twigs, some myrtle branches and a citron, and wave these together preferably inside the Sukka. • Of course, seen from the outside, these seeming arbitrary items and actions defy understanding. But then so does a flailing ,yelling person on a beach seems deranged, until one knows the context: he is stranded on a barren island for weeks on end with no meaningful food and sees a boat on the horizon. • Everything needs context. The fruit bearing and tasty, but non fragrant date palm being the learned Jew but whose practice leaves a little to be desired, , the tasteless and scentless willow being the illiterate non practicing Jew. The beautifully scented myrtle being the Jew with some knowledge. And the citron, with both taste and fragrance, being the learned Jew who also practices what he preaches. • We take these together into one hand, wave them together, and declare that all Jews, no matter what background, knowledge quotient, or degree of life practice, are bound up together in one destiny. • Don’t wave frantically on a desert island. Wave the four species meaningfully in your beautiful sukkah.
