THE BLACK PRINCE - CHAPTER 3 Grim Trails - Episode 7 ----------------------------------- Series Video #8 "Late into the night, candles still flickering, I sat numb considering my options. It was less than two days into my mission and already I had discovered the whereabouts of Brynjolf as well as a possible lead on the Dark Brotherhood. By rights I should have been celebrating but I was not. Clearly I would have a long and difficult path to follow but even so, it felt too easy. If I had known precisely how difficult, it’s possible I may given up completely on this An-Xileel cause and become a mushroom farmer in some distant and secluded cavern, never to be bothered again by the outside world and all of its strife. I was startled by a sound at my door. I can say without reservation I had never had a visitor since arriving in Windhelm a year earlier, and tonight of all nights? It could be no coincidence. However, upon opening the door I found the street outside empty. Lying on my stoop was a tattered note. There was no question about the location but who had left this message? Was it a trap? It’s quite possible it was but at this stage I felt I could not ignore any leads so I took up my weapons and ventured into the sewers. Arriving at the drop I was startled by who I saw. Standing there was the old man from the Assemblage, Stands-In-Shallows. He was dressed in the rags that seemed to be his custom. I am certain anyone in the assemblage would have provided him with actual clothing. After all, that is what the Assemblage is supposed to be about, helping your fellow man, safety in numbers and such. Clearly his style was a choice and one I could never understand. The man was a raging and unapologetic skooma addict well known to hit up most anyone for the drug with no apparent sense of shame. In fact, it was in part this man’s continual badgering that caused me to abandon the assemblage a year before. That and his tendency to wax poetic on the work habits of the younger generation, all the while taking their charity and begging for a fix. I had never spoken a word to the man and certainly never supplied him with skooma and yet here he stood at a clandestine drop site only myself and one other soul could have know of. He stood there glaring at me, an imperious expression upon his face, looking nothing like the addict I had come to know and dislike. Who was this man in reality and why did I feel as if I were being judged unworthy? What happened next was incredible. Despite our obvious philosophical differences, the old man insisted I layout my gear and he proceed to give me advice on everything from weapons to packs. It was obvious that man knew his work and knew it well. By the time we were finished he had modified my gear roll making it water tight and had completely silenced my crossbow’s cocking mechanism. All the while he peppered our conversation with practical information that would be invaluable in my mission. After the old man left I opened the tattered bag. Inside was a traditional Argonian blowgun, darts and four bottles of curare poison. This was not simply a gift, it was an honored treasure from an elder and one I hoped to put to good use. The conversation left me rattled and I had difficulty sleeping. Was I, were WE really San-Xileel? All talk and no fight? I found myself with a completely new understanding of the first generation fighters. I had always looked upon them as criminal but while I don’t agree with all they did, it is true that the harsh slap they gave the imperials secured the independence we enjoy today. In the end, the conversation only strengthened my resolve to not lose what they sacrificed so much to gain and to never again judge a book by its cover."
