Mont-Saint-Michel lies on Frances north-west coast, in the middle of a magnificent tidal bay between Normandy and Brittany. Wherever you are in the bay, the monument always dominates, a clever feat by builders of Mont-Saint-Michel. In over 300 years they created a complex which would cast its shadow far into the future. At low tide you can walk around the fortress and get a close look at the 180 metre high structure. The current abbey was in effect built on top of the former abbey. Parts of the building collapsed in the past. The cathedral currently consists of three floors as it were. Visitors have to start at the beginning, the magistral entry port. n the tv-series Heritage Sites of the World we visit 26 locations. Each location featured is considered to be unique of universal value for all mankind. Officially designated by UNESCO as World Heritage Site, each one is to be safeguarded for the future as a testimony to its enduring past.
