It's a problem a lot of us face every day, but it's not one you would commonly associate with former pro athletes.

Even the uber-fit can end up being overweight.

"I had lost hope in the fact I could actually lose weight," former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Rob Taylor said.

That hope has since been restored for the former NFL player. Since retiring, Taylor began packing on the pounds.

"When you finish and you keep eating like that and you still are in the habit, you still have the urge to gorge yourself. The V-shape becomes a pear," Taylor said.

Now thanks to a weight loss program study by both Tampa General Hospital and the University of South Florida, Taylor and a handful of other former NFL players have lost weight. Taylor lost 93 pounds.

“For the first time in a long time, now it's very slow, I can actually jog a little bit," Taylor said.

The six-month study is part of the HOPE (Heart, Obesity, Prevention and Education) program for former NFL players. The study included nutrition counseling and changing behavior when it comes to dieting and exercising. Over the six months, the average weight loss among the four players was 50 pounds.

Their average body mass index dropped from 40 to 33.

"When you're 55, in NFL terms that means your 75 because of what we've done. So there is only one solution, that is dramatically take this on and to make that commitment every day," former NFL Player Brian Holloway said.
