Cape Town, October 1 -- Pavement braais in townships are being made healthier and safer by a group of local engineering students. They have shipped 50 specially-designed stoves from Durban, for vendors who use scrap wood to braai. Researchers say the wood releases toxins that are harmful to both consumers and the environment. But the students say the new stoves burn the wood at a higher temperature, igniting the toxins before they are released into the air and food. They say they are hoping to teach vendors how to make their own stoves to safeguard their health and save money.
