Vayeitzei (Shabbat Sat. 17th November/9th Kislev)
Courage in Adversity
Notes: When do we shine? When do we draw on stamina, courage and commitment? Inevitably it is while undergoing a challenge, in a state of stress, when the odds seem to be stacked against us.
• In this week’s Parsha, Vayeitzei, Yaakov Avinu leaves his tranquil life in Be’ersheva and moves in with his conniving brother in law, Lavan in the less than a model city - that of Charan.
• Yet it is under the adversity of Lavan’s pressure and attempts to swindle Yaakov that Yaakov prospers. It is here that he produces the twelve tribes of Israel and it is here in Charan that he moulds his family into the close-knit unit that eventually, decades later, leaves with him, leaving Lavan bereft of his daughters due to their loyalty to Yaakov.
• We too sometimes need to experience a ‘Lavan period’ in our lives to achieve the goals that we are destined for. In a similar manner we see that the olive produces its desirable oil only under the hammer – when beaten. So does life sometimes pressure and enclose, but for the sole purpose of drawing from us the best fruits of our labours.
• Don’t despair in the face of seeming adversity. Relish its great potential in your life.
