Constructed on October 4, 1882 by the British, it was initially used by the Government (read British) employees for taking rest and also doubled up as a stable for their horses. Later it started functioning as a mail office for exchanging communication (letters) between officials in Udhagamandalam and in Madras Presidency and Kerala.
