They sell tambourines with brass jingles for 30 bucks, and even better ones advertised as "Extra Dry" that are extra-controllable for the recording studio. These latter ones cost around $100. I love the way tambourines sound on those old classic rock recordings, and I would love to add that sound to some of my home recordings. But there was no way I was going to pay that much for a tambourine! So I decided to try to upgrade the one I already had. Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. U.S. Pennies made before 1982 are made of 95% copper and 5% zinc (since then, this ratio was basically reversed). When flattened, these pennies produce a nice "shimmering" resonating sound similar to a mini cymbal, as composed to modern pennies that sound dull and flat. After drilling some small holes in them and using them for my cheap tambourine's jingle-ectomy, I thought the initial results turned out pretty darned good.
