On Wednesday, MEPs held a heated debate on how to tackle the refugee crisis in Europe after European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker delivered his first ever State of the Union Speech in Strasbourg. "The refugees fleeing from war and we have to welcome them on our continent, otherwise Europe doesn't exist as a concept, as continent by a Union funded on solidarity,” leader of the S&D Group Giovanni Pittella said. "I think that we need a new initiative and I think in the framework of the United Nations to end the bloodshed in Syria, to stop terrorism, to make Syria again safe for the refugees, so that later on they can return to their homes. So my plea to you Ms Mogherini, my plea to the Presidency of the Council is that we call that you call on the representatives of the United National Security Council to launch such an initiative as fast as possible, to end the conflict in Syria because it is the only sustainable solution for this crisis," ALDE leader Guy Verhofstadt added.
