KETTERING -- A new tool in neurosurgery is being called a "game changer" and Kettering Medical Center is the only hospital in central and southern Ohio to use it. It's called NeuroBlate and surgeons use it for deep brain tumors or tumors considered to be inoperable. The laser is only the size of a pencil in diameter. The laser is placed on the tumor using real-time MRI images. Surgeons treat the tumor by heating the cells up until they're destroyed. Doctors told us this technology gives patients hope. "This gives the a light at the end of the tunnel that's not a train. this is something that can help the quality of their life, maybe even prolong their life," said Dr. Phillip Porchelli of Kettering Medical Center. Dr. Porchelli said that because the incision is so small there's faster recovery time for patients.
