88-year-old shoots robbery suspect in his home

HAMILTON, Ohio (WKRC) - An elderly man is recovering after being beaten and robbed.

However, 88-year-old Bill Ziegler got the last word in when he fired his gun hitting one of the suspects in the leg. After the shooting, the man and woman took off running.

Ziegler says he had just finished washing his car and the pair approached him in his yard asking for money. When Ziegler told them he didn’t have any money he says the two forced him the house and began punching and kicking him. Ironically, it was one of the suspects that reminded Ziegler that he had a gun in the house when the man asked him if he had a gun.

"I did have a gun stolen about a month ago, but I bought another one,” said Ziegler.

As the male robbery suspect was going through Ziegler’s wallet he said he grabbed his replacement gun, a .38 special, and fired one shot.

“Aim low, hit his leg on something. That’s what I did,” said Ziegler. "I didn't want to kill him, just hurt him a little bit."

Some of Ziegler’s neighbors say this is happening on a regular basis and they are sick of it.

"It's really sad that people are breaking into people's houses. It has to do with heroin, it has to do with prostitution. Both of them. I would like to see the community have a neighborhood watch so we can watch out for each other,” said Virginia LeMaster.

The pair stole Ziegler’s wallet, cell phone and home phone. They tried to take his television but left it after the shooting. Police are looking at it hoping to get a fingerprint match.
