(8 Nov 2018) The resumption of US sanctions on Iran which began on Monday have provoked a spectrum of views in the region. The United States on Monday re-imposed oil and banking sanctions on Iran that where lifted under the 2015 nuclear deal but granted waivers to eight major importers to continue buying Iranian petroleum products without penalty for another six months. The sanctions, originally introduced to force Iran to the negotiating table over it's nuclear program, are now also justified by the Trump administration with Iran's involvement in the affairs of various Arab states. In Yemen, where Iranian influence is brought to bear through support to the Houthi movement, two men spoke in the city of Aden, controlled by the Saudi-led coalition, which is competing with Tehran for regional influence. The two men spoke about their hopes that the sanctions will help roll back Iranian power in the region. In Iraq, where Tehran wields great influence through a range of political parties and armed groups, one Baghdad resident said that the sanctions will only result in punishing the Iranian people and not the government, not unlike the sanctions on Iraq in the 90s.
