he Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced an indefinite strike with effect from Sunday, August 13, directing lecturers not to teach any subject whatsoever in Universities across the country. This was contained in a memo to lecturers signed by Biodun Ogunyemi, president of the ASUU national strike coordinating committee, who noted that they resolved to go on the strike because the federal government failed to implement its 2009 agreement and 2013 memorandum of understanding (MoU). Some of the pending unresolved issues highlighted by ASUU in the memo includes non-payment of salaries, non-payment of earned academic allowance (EAA), removal of universities staff schools from funding by government and non-implementation of provisions of the 2014 pension reform act with respect to retired professors and their salaries, amongst others. ASUU's decision to embark on the strike was reached during its national executive council (NEC) meeting, at the university of Abuja main campus, Giri, on the 12th of August 2017. According to its memo seen by our correspondent in Abuja, the result of the referendum showed that an overwhelming majority of the branches of the union voted for the strike. ASUU said the strike became necessary after exhausting all avenues to get government to fully implement the 2009 FGN-ASUU agreement and the 2013 MoU as well as related demands.
