Dog lovers turned out in force Thursday evening for a public meeting on a Waldo-area dog park.

The group WOOF and its supporters are pushing for an off-leash dog park in a section of Sunnyside Park at 84th and Summit streets.

Numerous dog owners showed up early with their four-legged friends to demonstrate the demand for the park, KMBC's Martin Augustine reported.

However, not everyone who attended the meeting supported the park. There were several dozen residents who were against idea.

The meeting came after months of fighting with the Kansas City Parks Board. Last summer, the board canceled a public meeting on the dog park, saying a decision had already been made, and supporters were outraged that they wouldn't get their say.

In September, the parks board agreed to take up the dog park issue by appointing a special committee, which has been holding hearings to decide where best to put the off-leash dog park.

The committee will make a written report to the parks board next month suggesting several possible sites for a dog park.
