‘Slim’ chance Fla. county makes recount deadline

(15 Nov 2018) The supervisor of midterm elections in Florida's Palm Beach County says the likelihood of her office completing the recount by the state-mandated 3 p.m. (2000 GMT) deadline is slim. Susan Bucher defended her office Thursday morning, saying the incomplete recount wasn't "for lack of human effort". Bucher explained that the elections office in Riviera Beach shut down Wednesday night because "our machines went down". Bucher says she believes her office did everything it could despite not completing the US Senate race recount. Lawsuits that could spur further delays are still swirling, including one filed by US Senator Bill Nelson and Democrats that seeks to set aside the looming deadline. Still, more than a week after Election Day, the sense of resolution could be lacking Thursday. Once the machine recount is complete, state law requires a hand review of races with margins of less than 0.25 percentage points. The developments are fueling frustrations among Democrats and Republicans alike. Republicans, including President Donald Trump, have argued without evidence that voter fraud threatens to steal races from the GOP.
