Here is a simple electronic motor that uses piano wire for the rotor shaft. The reason for the piano wire is because it is hardened steel. The shaft was ground to a needle point on the ends and runs in a softer steel Philips screw head. A very good lubricant was used. The goal was to make a stable low friction setup for a 'Mendocino' type motor---without using magnetic suspension. A much better bearing would be sapphire jewel bearings but cost is an issue.
