At a time when the Bharatiya Janata Party has intensified its campaign against the Supreme Court order on entry of women in Sabarimala, senior jurist Soli Sorabjee Friday accused the party of hypocrisy.

Given that the party welcomed the top court’s 2017 judgment outlawing the practice of triple talaq prevalent among some sections of the Muslim community, it should also welcome the order on Sabarimala, he said in an interview to ThePrint. Not doing so, he said was “hypocritical”.

“If triple talaq interference was good, then Sabarimala interference is equally good,” he said.

Asked if the court should refrain from interfering in matters of faith, Sorabjee said, the day the court looks away when there is a violation of a fundamental right, and says it cannot do anything about it, would be “a sad day for the country”.

The entire premise to not allow menstruating women from entering the temple is “irrational” and violative of their right to pray, he added.
