The quadruple section stretching for over 100 km between Sitarampur and Saktigarh on the Eastern Railways is a wonderful place for witnessing some parallel action. Here, we get something quite close to parallel action: WDM3A hauled Sealdah Guwahati Kanchjungha Express accelerates through Saktigarh and picks up very good speed as she heads towards Bardhaman. First, she is met by a crawling Asansol Sealdah Intercity Express, led by a Howrah WAP4 on the third line. Within 10 seconds of passing her, we are greeted by a Howrah WDM3A, huffing and puffing with the Vishwabharati Fast Passenger on the fourth line! Both trains take the Howrah Bardhaman Main Line from Saktigarh and proceed towards Bandel, whereupon the former crosses the Ganga through the Jubilee Bridge and heads towards Sealdah via Naihati and the latter proceeds on the main line enroute Howrah. The trains differ by about 15 minutes with respect to their arrival in Bardhaman and Vishwabharati subsequently follows the Intercity till Bandel. On this day, both were slightly delayed, the Intercity more than the Vishwabharati and thereby, allowed for this rare moment of two trains following each other on separate tracks, within 10 seconds of each other. This is the greatest advantage of the Sitarampur-Saktigarh section on Eastern Railways: with four tracks, there is very little congestion and extremely smooth passage of trains with slower trains often being overtaken in motion by their faster counterparts. One only hopes that this will become a more common feature in India in the near future!
