Thrills and chills at new sub-zero bar

(14 Nov 2018) LEADIN: Beirut is now home to Lebanon's coolest bar - one made entirely of ice. Ice Bar Beirut allows visitors to experience sub zero temperatures while enjoying their favourite drinks. STORYLINE: There's now no better place to chill out. Welcome to Ice Bar Beirut in the city's Blueberry Square. Inside it's minus 10 degrees Celsius and the walls and bar are made of solid blocks of ice, the perfect spot for a social media selfie. One visitor says: "I wanted to try something different, I saw it on Instagram and thought I'd come and see what this new programme in Lebanon is." It's an out of this world experience with ice sculptures of an alien and a spaceship frozen on the walls. The bar's owner and manager Marc al-Hajj says it's all about providing a new experience for patrons. "We had a lot of strange reactions, some people came in for only two minutes and ran outside. They walked around and immediately ran outside. Some people came in to challenge each other for an hour and their fingers went blue," he says. Wrapped up in thermal, hooded coats, visitors keep warm while taking lots of photos in the unusual surroundings. Karine Hajal says she came here out of curiosity. "It's a unique experience, we didn't have it in Lebanon, this is the first time it's here," she says. Similar ice bars can be found in cities around the world, including Mexico City, London, Paris, Tokyo, Dubai and Hong Kong. Children are also welcome to visit with an adult before 8pm, with no alcohol served. Prices for adults start from 24 US dollars for a regular ticket which includes one drink. A child's ticket costs 14 dollars. Ice Bar Beirut opened in September.
