Jakob Maria Mierscheid is known for saying things most other politicians would never dare. The Social Democrat MP has had a seat in the German parliament since 1979,and is famous for his bizarre and often provocative comments. Yet the 76-year-old never attends parliamentary sessions or debates. Mierscheid,a retired master tailor from Rhineland-Pfalz,is the fictional creation of former Social Democrat MPs Karl Haehser and Peter Würtz. To mark Mierscheid's 30th anniversary as a member of parliament,People and Politics went hunting for clues about this Phantom of the Bundestag .
