Greens leader: Brexit deal will pass in European Parliament with broad agreement

(25 Nov 2018) The Brexit agreement should pass at the European Parliament with a broad agreement, according to a member of the Brexit steering group in the European Parliament. Philippe Lamberts was speaking in Brussels as European Union leaders formally endorsed the deal on Britain's departure from the bloc next year. "I do expect a broad majority in the European Parliament for the agreement if it passes in Westminster," said Lamberts, however warning that with current pressure from pro-Brexit and pro-EU British lawmakers it was "far from certain" the deal would be voted through in the UK. The agreement paves the way for Britain's smooth departure from the bloc from the EU side, though a bumpy ride still awaits in the UK. The deal must still be ratified by the European Parliament, something parliament President Antonio Tajani said would likely take place early in 2019. More dauntingly for British Prime Minister Theresa May, it also needs approval from Britain's Parliament.
