(11 Dec 2018) Chian reiterated its position in protecting its citizens abroad, as a Chinese technology executive waited to see whether a Canadian court would release her on bail in a case that has riled US-Chinese relations. Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said at a conference in Shanghai that the government would "spare no effort" to protect against "any bullying that infringes the legitimate rights and interests of Chinese citizens". Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Lu Kang said on Tuesday that Wang was referring to the cases of all Chinese abroad, including Meng Wanzhou, the arrested Huawai executive. The Japanese government on Monday announced a ban on China's Huawei and ZTE from official contracts. Lu also commented on US sanctions on three senior North Korea officials for human rights abuses and called for a political settlement of the tension on the Korean Peninsula.
