Does it matter how attractive someone really is? We all know that at some level it does, but how does this manifest itself? Well, here is a simple demonstration: watch Ruth and Rebecca as they struggle trying to get their unwieldy luggage up the stairs. How long will it be before someone helps them? The Beauty Premium is one of the most solidly documented phenomena in Social Psychology. Countless studies have come to the same conclusion: attractiveness matters. Here are a number of additional discoveries which are less well known: a) studies with infants have shown that the preference for beauty is innate; b) there is a spill-over effect; not only are we attracted to good-looking people, we attribute all kinds of positive traits to them as well; c) it is not only sexual attraction; we like good-looking people regardless of our gender and sexual orientation; d) these positive attributions are largely unconscious – we are often unaware of the effect of people’s good looks on us.
