Outbreaks of inter-communal violence have struck Myanmar hard at a time of political change. Together with the Myanmar Red Cross, the ICRC is stepping up its work, in particular in the field of health care, with many of people having had to abandon their homes and seek shelter in makeshift camps. During a visit to London, the ICRC's head of operations for Asia and the Pacific, Alain Aeschlimann, spoke of the continuing tension and fear between communities. And he outlined the importance of ensuring the humanitarian response to violence is based solely on need, favouring no particular group.
