My van broke down for the first time in 8 years. I was 89 miles from home and nowwhere near a motor factors and had no tools with me! Because my van has been so reliable I do not have breakdown cover,so I joined the RAC on the day, paid a penalty and got a tow home. I cancelled my policy the next day and got a refund of that part of the cost. Total tow cost was about £160. I reckon it was cheaper than an 89 mile taxi!

At home I narrowed the issue down to a broken alternator belt, which caused the water pump not to turn, which caused the engine to overheat, then the manifold leaked. It is a plastic manifold. Listed on ebay as: VAG/AUDI/VW ENGINE COOLANT FLANGE, SEALS AND CLIPS - 068121132 - FEBI 12404, this cost £9.70 delivered. The alternator belt was listed as NEW DAYCO - V RIBBED BELT - 6PK923 and cost £4.80 delivered. Altogether not an expensive fix. I did the oil and filter when I had the van up on stands and refreshed the coolant.
