Litro World Series: India: The Power of Fiction Across Borders and of Translation: Shashi Tharoor, Suki Kim, Tishani Doshi, Vivek Shanbhag and Eric Akoto

Shashi Tharoor, a third-term Member of Parliament for Thiruvananthapuram, is the bestselling author of 20 fiction and non-fiction books. He is a former Under Secretary-General of the United Nations and a former Minister of State for Human Resource Development and for External Affairs in the Government of India. He has won numerous awards, including the Pravasi Bharatiya Samman, a Commonwealth Writers’ Prize and the Crossword Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2019, Dr. Tharoor was also awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for his book An Era of Darkness. He chairs Parliament’s Standing Committee on Information Technology.

Suki Kim is an investigative journalist, novelist and the only writer ever to have lived undercover in North Korea. She is the author of New York Times bestselling literary nonfiction Without You, There Is No Us: Undercover Among the Sons of North Korea’s Elite and her first novel The Interpreter, a finalist for a PEN Hemingway Prize. She has written for many publications including The New York Times, Harper’s and The New Republic, where she is a contributing editor.

Vivek Shanbhag writes in Kannada. He has published eight works of fiction, two plays and has edited two anthologies, one of them in English. He published and edited the literary journal Desha Kaala for seven years. His novel Ghachar Ghochar was translated into English to critical acclaim worldwide. Shanbhag has co-translated U.R. Ananthamurthy’s book Hindutva or Hind Swaraj into English. He was a Honorary Fellow at the International Writing Program 2016 at the University of Iowa.

Eric Akoto is the Editor in Chief and Publisher of Litro Magazine. Akoto has written for various publications and contributed to various books. He also guest curates and comperes at festivals such as Latitude Festival and The Hay Festival. Founded in 2005, Litro Magazine is a fully fledged literary and creative arts platform allowing writers to write and readers to read. Founded by Akoto, Litro‘s World Series editions look to provide readers with a platform encouraging cross -cultural conversations.

Described as the 'greatest literary show on Earth', the Jaipur Literature Festival is a sumptuous feast of ideas.

Past speakers have ranged from Nobel Laureates His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama,  J.M. Coetzee, Muhammad Yunus  and Orhan Pamuk, Man Booker Prize winners Ben Okri, Howard Jacobson, Margaret Atwood, Marlon James, Michael Ondaatje, Paul Beatty and Yan Martel, Pulitzer Prize winners Andrew Sean Greer,  Benjamin Moser, Colson Whitehead and Jhumpa Lahiri, Sahitya Akademi winners Gulzar, Javed Akhtar, M.T. Vasudevan Nair as well as the late Girish Karnad, Mahasweta Devi and U.R. Ananthamurthy along with literary luminaries including Amish Tripathi, Chima¬manda Ngozi Adichie, Vikram Chandra and Vikram Seth. An annual event that goes beyond literature, the Festival has also hosted Amartya Sen, Amitabh Bachchan, the late A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, Oprah Winfrey, Stephen Fry, Thomas Piketty and former president of Afghanistan, Hamid Karzai.

The Jaipur Literature Festival is a flagship event of Teamwork Arts, which produces over 33 highly acclaimed performing arts, visual arts and literary festivals across more than 40 cities globally.
