Drop-out is a process that has widely different causes in different countries, can happen at very different ages, and reveals problems before, in and after school and within the community at large. How to prevent it? And how to get those who have dropped out back into school or other appropriate structures?

In this lively WISE 2011 Summit debate, panelists from Canada, Guinea and Cuba talk about the roots of drop-out in their parts of the world, ranging from poverty to poor school facilities, from problems in the ways girls and boys are treated and early girl marriages, or from the use of a non-indigenous language in education to an entrenched culture of failure, violence and despair. How can the state, families, schools and students work together to reduce drop-out, entice learners back into the classroom and ensure that low socio-economic status is not always a recipe for failure and that hope and educational aspirations can thrive even in unpromising circumstances? All of the distinguished panelists have played active roles in successfully combating this multi-faceted problem.
