This is another of my very favorite Irish songs even though it is about a tragic times. It is based on true events. The ever giving United States donated nearly worthless corn to help out the poor and starving in Ireland. Trevelyan used the opportunity to sell the corn which further hampered the cause. The poor soul in the song stole a bit and was caught and shipped to Australia. I have actually recorded it several times, but made the mistake of watching other people's fine videos and became discouraged. (for example - check out Mollysirisheyes version to the right in related videos if you want a jaw dropping example!) I hope I do this song justice.
