(12 Dec 2018) When a gunman opened fire at random on Tuesday evening at Strasbourg's renowned Christmas market, many ran for safety to bars and shops nearby. One mother - whose daughter had been at the market during the time of the attack - told reporters on Wednesday, that her daughter managed to make it to safety by running to their flat nearby. "She left holding her baby in her arms, so she saved herself by running to our apartment, which is on the same street," Malorie said. "Fifteen people followed her. All in complete panic. They found shelter in our home." On Wednesday people were lighting candles at a growing shrine at the site of the attack, as police patrolled the area. The suspected gunman, identified by police union officials as 29-year-old Cherif Cherkatt, is at large. He was on a police watch list for radicalism before Tuesday's attack. The judicial official says that other members of Cherkatt's family are also known for radical views. Interior Minister Christophe Castaner told parliament Wednesday that 720 security officers have been mobilised to search for the gunman. Authorities said two people were killed, one left brain dead and 12 others injured in the shooting rampage.
