This video honors Lise J. Frank of Danville, California, who is our 2008 USTA Barbara Williams Leadership Award recipient.

The award was established in 2003 to honor the late Barbara Williams, a long-time USTA volunteer who gave unselfishly of her time and energy to promote the sport of tennis. It recognizes a female volunteer who, through her leadership and by her example, has encouraged and inspired others to become volunteers and assume leadership roles at the community, section and/or national levels of the United States Tennis Association.

Frank began her USTA volunteer activities more than 30 years ago when her daughter, Mette, began to play tennis. Over the decades, she has provided inspiration and encouragement to a multitude of people and demonstrated true leadership abilities in shaping and executing USTA programs, locally and worldwide. Frank started her volunteer career in the Northern California section in 1978, working on behalf of junior tennis. She also served as a tournament director before being named to the USTA Pro Circuit Committee in 1989. She became vice chairman of the committee in 1993 and its chairman in 1995 and remained so for 11 years. Since 1999, Frank has represented North America on the ITF Womens Circuit Committee and has succeeded in strengthening USTA involvement.

Under her leadership, tour-level competition for aspiring USTA pros increased significantly. Today, many seek her advice and counsel, including USTA Board of Directors, staff, committee chairs, players, parents, coaches and tournament directors. Frank was inducted into the USTA Northern California Tennis Hall of Fame in 2007.
