The Aspen Ideas Festival, 2009. US courts provide a model for the World, with judges from around the globe regularly visiting America to learn more about how our courts operate. Yet, while we export some of our best rule-of-law practices, there are still thorny issues here at home. Nasty ad campaigns in state court judicial races, an "arms race" for cash in those campaigns, and problems with recusal schemes all illustrate the problems states have selecting judges. How do we pick our judges, can we do it better, and why should the American public care? Speakers: Stephen Breyer, Viet D. Dinh, Sanford Levinson, Sandra Day O'Connor The Aspen Ideas Festival is the nation's premier, public gathering place for leaders from around the globe and across many disciplines to engage in deep and inquisitive discussion of the ideas and issues that both shape our lives and challenge our times.
