Judith Joseph, MD, MBA, child and adolescent psychiatry fellow at the Child Study Center at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York City, interviews Dr. Kelly Kelleher, MD, MPH, Professor of Pediatrics, Psychiatry and Public Health at Nationwide Children's Hospital and The Ohio State University. Dr. Kelleher's research interests focus on accessibility, effectiveness and quality of health care services for children and their families, especially those affected by mental disorders, substance abuse or violence. Psychiatric research commonly focuses on the initial treatment of child and adolescent mental illnesses. However there is a gap in knowledge that Dr. Kelleher coined "The Evidence Deficit Disorder". This refers to the lack of research that accurately measures treatment outcomes over time. This gap in knowledge is particularly relevant because of present changes in health care and health care reform. Health care reform is trending towards implementing treatments that are coordinated and provide longitudinal care to patients and their families. While understanding Health Care reform may seem like a lofty goal for most, parents and their kids can become integral members of the treatment team by being in constant communication with their health care providers.
