It's a golden year for the Indianapolis Zoo, as April 18, 2014, marks our 50th anniversary! The concept for the Indianapolis Zoo first emerged in the 1940s when newspaper columnist Lowell Nussbaum began voicing his dream of establishing a zoo in Indianapolis. Nussbaum would eventually become known as "the father of the Indianapolis Zoo" and with tremendous support from the city of Indianapolis, his dream became a reality in 1964 when the original Zoo opened on East 30th Street. Originally called the Washington Park Children's Zoo, it was home to many animals including Asian elephants, Aldabra tortoises, penguins and more! Within 20 years, it had already doubled in size and in 1982, the Zoo began looking for a new larger location. Six years later, on June 11, 1988, the new Zoo opened at its current location in White River State Park.
