Professor Robert Cywinski is Dean of Applied Sciences at The University of Huddersfield. His principal field of research is the application of neutron scattering, muon spin relaxation, and x-ray synchrotron techniques to the study of magnetic and superconducting properties of alloys and compounds, although he also uses similar techniques in the study of materials of biological, chemical, engineering, palaeontological and archaeological importance. In addition to a illustrious career as scientist and academic, Bob actively promotes the public understanding of science and has made a number of science movies, three of which have featured Lord Robert Winston and Professor Sir Patrick Stewart OBE., and one in which he stars as the "Quantum Cowboy".
Physicists at the University of Huddersfield have proposed an alternative nuclear future based upon innovative technology that has inherently higher safety margins than conventional reactors; that is low waste; that does not include plutonium as part of its fuel cycle, that is intrinsically proliferation resistant; that can effectively burn legacy radiotoxic waste; and is both sustainable and cost effective because it utilises thorium rather than uranium as nuclear fuel.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)
