After Dr. Das retired from teaching, the University of Alberta appointed him Professor Emeritus of Educational Psychology and re-named the centre which he directed with distinction for 22 years in his honour as the J.P. Das Developmental Disabilities Centre.

Das has made major contributions in teaching, research, administration and community service.

A few highlights of Professor Das' long career:
Das' scholarly research contributions focus on cognitive processes and assessment, and mental retardation and learning difficulties in children. Particularly noteworthy is his research on reformulating the concept and measurement of intelligence which attracted national and international attention. Together with a colleague from George Mason University in the United States, Das has constructed the Das-Naglieri cognitive assessment system (CAS)—an alternative measure of intelligence that helps in diagnosis of learning difficulties. 

This highly original assessment system was standardized in the United States and, as well, translated and standardized in Spain and Japan. It is increasingly popular as an alternative to the traditional IQ tests. There are two program interventions, PREP & COGENT, which Das has constructed to meet the needs of children with learning disabilities including attention deficit, (PREP), and a school-readiness program for kindergarten to Grade 2 children. Both programs are framed within the same neurocognitive theory of intelligence as CAS. Both have been translated to several foreign languages and are found to be effective. 

J P Das is the recipient of a special award from the Department of Manpower and Immigration (Canada) for his volunteer work with populations with learning difficulties. In addition, in 1999, he was inducted as a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada for his scholarly contributions to the study of intelligence. And, in 2004, he was awarded an Honorary Doctorate degree (Honoris Causa) by the University of Vigo in Spain.

J. P. Das obtained his honors degree in Philosophy, a Master of Arts in Experimental Psychology in India, and a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of London Institute of Psychiatry while working with Hans Eysenck. 
His research on cognitive processes has resulted in several scholarly books including Verbal Conditioning and Behavior (1969) and Simultaneous and Successive Cognitive Processes (1979). 

He has also authored more than 200 published research papers and book chapters, many of which have focused on efforts to redefine intelligence. 
He has held visiting appointments at Peabody College of Vanderbilt University (as a Kennedy Foundation Professor), UCLA, Monash University in Melbourne, Australia, and Moscow State University, in Russia.
