 Californian marine biologist Giancarlo Thomae has come under fire after a picture he uploaded to Facebook went viral this week. Giancarlo snapped a female biologist laying next to a dead great white shark, and this, of course, has offended a lot of people especially because she is a marine biologist, they should be showing respect right?

Well, there’s more to this shark selfie that everyday people might not understand. The main reason Giancarlo got his co-worker to lay next to the dead great white wasn’t to have a selfie snapped, it was, in fact, to be used as a scale reference to show just how big the great white was.
